Evening with Dr. Gabor Maté

Updated: Oct 2, 2022

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a live event “(ICW) In Conversation With - Dr. Gabor Maté.” It was certainly very inspiring, informative and amazing. I have been following Gabor’s work/teachings for quite a few years now, hence the evening was very memorable for me.

My three key “takeaways” from the talk are:

1: “Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside of you as a result of what happened to you.” Dr. Gabor Maté.

2: To heal or to “be whole” means to not reject any part of yourself.

“When we shut down emotion, you’re also affecting your immune system, your nervous system. So the repression of emotion, which is a survival strategy, then becomes a source of physiological illness later on”. Dr. Gabor Maté.

3: Trauma is a disconnect from self - healing is a reconnect to self (and /or finding yourself).

Thank you Dr. Gabor Maté for all your wisdom and expertise. Your leadership in creating a trauma informed world is appreciated beyond measure.

I recommend all of Gabor’s books however, his newest book (The Myth of Normal-Trauma, Illness, & Healing in a Toxic Culture) is my new favourite.
